Calplas Pool Filters: Industrial Quality for Crystal Clear Water

People often think that chlorine does all the work. Not true. 80% of water quality depends on physical filtration, and only 20% on chemicals. If your water is cloudy or you’re using too many products, the problem is often an undersized or obsolete filter.

At Astro Piscines, we’ve made a radical choice: to offer only Calplas filters, manufactured to industrial standards in Spain since 1970. Why do we do this? Because we refuse to compromise on water quality for our customers in Geneva and the canton of Vaud.

Why We’ve Chosen Calplas Exclusively

Unlike blow-molded plastic filters for the general public, Calplas filters come from the industrial world. Each tank is handcrafted, layer by layer, from reinforced laminated polyester. It’s the difference between a plastic body and a racing boat hull.

Laminated polyester vs. blown plastic: what’s the difference?

  • Extreme durability: Calplas tanks are designed to last for over 30 years, even with aggressive water (salt water pools).
  • Corrosion resistance: as strong as steel, without the rust
  • Optimized filter bed height: water passes through more filter material for superior quality
  • Body-integrated GAS threads: no leaky inserts
  • Transparent lid: visual check of filter media condition

Our philosophy is to offer a single excellent product rather than a range of compromises.

How to correctly size your pool filter?

An undersized filter is the main cause of persistent cloudy water. Sizing depends on three factors:

  • The volume of your pond: as a rule of thumb, the entire volume should be filtered in 4 to 6 hours maximum.
  • Your pump’s flow rate: the filter must be able to handle the flow rate without excessive pressure drop.
  • Ancillary equipment: counter-current swimming, solar heating, hydraulic robots… all increase requirements.

Our technicians will visit you free of charge in Geneva (Versoix, Cologny, Carouge), La Côte(Nyon, Gland, Rolle) and throughout the canton of Vaud (Morges, Lausanne, Pully, Vevey, Montreux) to analyze your installation and recommend the right model.

The secret of crystal-clear water: filter media

Filter Media: AFM glass or traditional sand?

The filter is the body, but the media inside is the engine. We always recommend AFM activated glass (Dryden Aqua) rather than traditional sand.

Why AFM glass is superior to sand

  • Fine filtration: retains particles down to 1 micron (compared with 40 microns for sand)
  • Anti-bacterial: bacteria can’t nest on glass, reducing chloramines (chlorine odor).
  • Economical: glass washes faster, so you use less water for backwashing.
  • Doubled service life: 10-15 years compared with 5-7 years for sand

The Calplas filter + AFM glass combination represents the very best in filtration. It is our standard for all new installations and renovations in Geneva and Vaud.

Our services: Changing sand or switching to AFM glass

Is your filter still working, but your water isn’t as clear as it used to be? The problem probably lies with the filter media. Over time, the sand becomes worn, rounded and less effective. Bacteria settle in, creating “preferential paths” where water passes through unfiltered.

Our technicians are on hand in Geneva and Vaud to give your filter a new lease of life:

  • Complete emptying of old media (sand or used glass)
  • Inspection of tank, strainers and diffuser
  • Filling with Dryden Aqua AFM glass (or new sand of your choice)
  • Start-up and filter time setting

💡 Tip: Take advantage of the media changeover to switch from sand to AFM glass. You’ll notice the difference from the very first bath: clearer water, less chlorine odor, and more frequent backwashes.

FAQ – Pool filtration

Frequently Asked Questions about Pool Filters

Which filter to choose for a 50 m³ pool?

For a 50 m³ pool, we recommend the Calplas FA-15 (0.30 m² filter surface) or the FA-20 (0.40 m²) if you have flow-intensive equipment such as a counter-current swim.

When should you change the sand or glass in your filter?

Sand wears out and becomes rounder over time, losing its filtering power. Allow 5 to 7 years for sand, 10 to 15 years for AFM glass. Signs of wear: cloudy water despite correct treatment, increasingly frequent backwashing. Ask us for a quote.

Why choose a Calplas filter over another brand?

Calplas filters are made from hand-laminated polyester, offering decades of durability. Unlike blown plastic filters, which can warp under pressure or UV light, Calplas tanks remain stable. It’s a very long-term investment.

Sand or filter glass: which to choose?

AFM glass is superior to sand in every respect: filtration fineness (1 micron vs. 40), anti-bacterial properties, doubled service life. The initial cost is higher, but the investment pays for itself in water and product savings. You can find AFM bags in our aquastore.ch online store or at our Nyon store: Route de Champ-Colin 2C.

Is it possible to replace an old filter with a Calplas on an existing system?

Absolutely. We regularly replace tired filters with Calplas. Standard fittings (2″) allow easy adaptation. We check compatibility with your pump during our free diagnosis.

What is the warranty on Calplas filters?

Calplas filters come with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. Designed to last over 30 years, they represent a very long-term investment.

Where can I buy a Calplas filter in Switzerland?
