How does a pool heat pump work?

THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE EXPLAINED SIMPLY

The operating principle of a pool heat pump is simple and economical: it captures the calories contained in the outside air (even in cool weather) to heat the water in your pool. It’s free, renewable energy!

The Thermodynamic Cycle in 4 Steps

  1. Evaporator: captures heat from the air, even at low outside temperatures
  2. The compressor: concentrates this energy and raises the temperature of the refrigerant
  3. The condenser (titanium exchanger): transfers heat to the pool water circulating in the circuit.
  4. Expansion valve: returns the fluid to low pressure to restart the cycle

Above-ground or semi-underground pools

How to choose the right wattage for your pool?

An undersized heat pump will run continuously (wear and tear and over-consumption). An oversized heat pump represents an unnecessary investment. Our experts calculate the precise heat balance of your pool, taking into account ..:

  • The volume of water in your pool
  • Wind exposure (Bise/Joran on Lake Geneva)
  • The presence of a blanket or shutter (essential for keeping the heat in!)
  • Altitude and climatic zone (Geneva vs Jura vaudois)
  • Your objectives: May-September or April-October swimming?

FAQ : Your questions about Swimming Pool Heat Pumps

Is a PAC swimming pool really silent?

Yes, today’s Full Inverter heat pumps are virtually inaudible. Our OTTIMO Polytropics drop to 19 dB at 10 meters in ECO-Silence mode – that’s less than a refrigerator. The MASTER range reaches 21-32 dB, depending on the model. At 10 meters, you won’t hear a thing from your terrace.

What is COP and why is it important?

The COP (Coefficient of Performance) measures energy efficiency. A COP of 10 means that for every 1 kW of electricity consumed, the heat pump produces 10 kW of heat. Our Polytropic heat pumps achieve a COP of 10 to 11 in ECO-Silence mode. The higher the COP, the lower your bill.

Will my heat pump work when the outside temperature is low?

Yes, the OTTIMO works down to -10°C, the MASTER down to -15°C. That’s enough to start the season as early as March-April in French-speaking Switzerland. The COP decreases in cold weather (around 3-4 at -7°C), but the heat pump continues to heat.

How long does it take to reach the ideal temperature?

With a correctly sized heat pump, it takes 24 to 48 hours to gain 10°C. Example: go from 18°C to 28°C in 2 days with an OTTIMO S+ on a 60 m³ pool. The rise is faster if the pool is covered.

Do I need a pool cover with a PAC?

It’s ESSENTIAL. An uncovered pool loses 80% of its heat through evaporation at night. Without a cover, your heat pump works for nothing. With a cover, you can reduce consumption by 30-50%.

How long does a pool heat pump last?

A well-maintained Polytropic heat pump lasts 15 to 20 years. The titanium exchanger is guaranteed for 15 years against corrosion, and the compressor for 7 years. We recommend annual maintenance (evaporator cleaning, refrigerant check).

Can I install the heat pump myself?

Technically possible, but not recommended. Installation requires skills in plumbing (connection to the filtration circuit) and electricity (dedicated power supply). Incorrect installation may invalidate the warranty and damage the compressor. Astro Piscines provides complete installation services.

What’s the difference between OTTIMO and MASTER?

OTTIMO: Compact cylindrical design, vertical blowing (ideal for small spaces), down to -10°C, WiFi included. MASTER: Classic horizontal format, more powerful, down to -15°C, WiFi + 4G, SOLAR mode for photovoltaic panels. For a standard pool (40-80 m³), both are suitable. Choose OTTIMO for design and silence, MASTER for power and cold.
